Perfect Score for Mahwah District in NJSPRA Communications Awards

THE SITUATION

Mahwah Township Public Schools sought to elevate its school communications with a seasonal newsletter to better connect with the entire Mahwah community. Up to that point, the district had mostly communicated only with its school community through email blasts and social media. LBC suggested a print newsletter to share positive news with the wider community, in a format that reflected the district’s high standards. The goal for The Thunderbird Times was to create a cohesive resource to share successes and nurture community pride across every household in the township.

THE STRATEGY

The LBC team, in collaboration with Mahwah Public Schools administrators, developed a comprehensive framework for the fall, winter and spring editions. We established timelines to ensure a seamless process from concept to mailbox, keeping both teams on track. LBC coordinated directly with the schools to gather a range of district updates, edited submitted features for tone, wrote spotlights and created engaging layouts. Finally, we coordinated the printing and mailing logistics for the entire Mahwah community.

THE WIN

The spring 2025 edition was recognized by the New Jersey School Public Relations Association as “Best in Class” for Newsletters in the 2025 Communications Awards. The newsletter earned a perfect score — a first for this category. This success validated the district’s strategic plan, proving that placing high-quality communication at the core of the district effectively connects families, staff and the broader community.
