Video Captures Spirit of Former NJASBO Director

Retirement Celebration of Laughter and Tears

THE SITUATION

In 2018, then New Jersey Association of School Business Officials Executive Director John Donohue announced he would retire in June of 2019, following the organization’s annual conference. Trustees and members wanted to honor Donohue at the 2019 conference luncheon in a special way.

THE STRATEGY

Laura Bishop, principal of Laura Bishop Communications, together with NJASBO leadership, suggested developing a video to highlight aspects of Donohue’s career. LBC put together an outline of Donohue’s time with NJASBO by gathering background materials and photos, conducting interviews, and compiling comments from the organization’s current and former members. With these as a backdrop, LBC crafted questions for an on-camera video interview with Donohue, conducted by Bishop.

The interview was recorded, with music and still photos added, by McHenry Creative Services. LBC selected the still photos and edited the video for content and length. LBC produced the video as a gift to John Donohue.

THE WIN

The video was considered a highlight of the luncheon, and prompted a response from Matthew Clarke, Business Administrator/Board Secretary, Springfield (NJ) Public Schools and former President, NJASBO: “Wow, you really knocked it out of the park! This is vintage John who we all love, respect and are fortunate to call our colleague. Really well done. (Love the photos at the end!).”
